Ancelotti: James Rodriguez not a guaranteed starter

Carlo Anceotti has denied that James Rodriguez will be an automatic starter at Bayern Munich.

Snatched by the Bavarians from Real Madrid on a two-year deal with option to buy for 35 million, the 26-year-old was expected by some to have a big impact, having sat on Real Madrid’s bench for two straight seasons.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti, who Coached him at the Santiago Bernabeu, claimed that the Colombian gave “more quality” to the Bavarian side, but also that “we didn’t sign James to replace anyone, but only to improve the team.

“If he deserves to play, he’ll play. If he doesn’t, he’ll sit on the bench. Of course, there are no guarantees for him”.

Ancelotti was speaking at a press conference, and his words were picked up by EFE.

The Italian Coach also denied that Rodriguez was signed to replace Thomas Muller, who is coming off a poor season. “If we think like that, we can say that he’s here to replace Thiago, Robben or Ribery,” Ancelotti concluded.
