Arsenal: the top 10 signings of the Wenger era

Arsenal-Chelsea is not going to be just another Premier League clash for Arsene Wenger who will celebrate his 20th anniversary as the Gunners’ coach during today’s home Chelsea clash. Six Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United record (27 years) is still pretty far, but, sitting on the same bench for 20 years must be considered quite an achievement these days.

Wenger has three Premier League titles with the Gunners, the last one in 2004.

Calciomercato.com has picked Wenger’s top 10 signings at Arsenal. Guess who the first spot belongs to? That shouldn’t be too difficult to get right.

10. Emmanuel Petit – He arrived from AS Monaco in 1997 and won the double in his first campaign. His price-tag? Just € 3.75 million

9. Fredrik Ljungberg – Pires on one edge of the pitch, the Swedish on the other. Wenger and his scouts signed him for just € 4.5 million in 1998. The former Sweden international was coming from Halmstads.

8. Aaron Ramsey – One of Wenger’s best recent signings. Scouted and signed from Cardiff for € 6.4 million

7. Marc Overmars – Scorer of 32 goals in 123 Arsenal games before moving to Barcelona. Wenger had sealed his transfer for € 7.5 million.

6. Sol Campbell – One of the most controversial signings in the history of English football. Arsenal signed him as a free agent from Tottenham in 2001. He has become a club’s legend.

5. Robert Pires – Not only Henry and Vieira, Robert Pires was another of those players who started the French devolution at Higbury. The French boss got him for € 9.8 million.

4. Cesc Fabregas – The Spaniard was bought from Barcelona’s youth team and sold for € 34 million to the same club after proving to be one of the best midfielders of the world under Wenger who had taken him for € 3.2 million.

3. Robin Van Persie – Signed from Feyenoord in 2004 for just € 4.5 million, the Dutchman was sold to Manchester United for  € 30 million after scoring 131 goals and registering 55 assists with the Gunners.

2. Patrick Vieira – Wenger had not been officially appointed as Arsenal’s boss yet when Vieira was signed, but it was the French boss to suggest his signing to the board. The Gunners sealed Vieira’s transfer for € 5 million , taking him from AC Milan.

1. Thierry Henry – One of the biggest regrets in Juventus’ hisotry. The Frenchman failed to impress during a six-month spell at Juventus. The Old Lady sold him to Arsenal in 1999 for € 16 million. The rest is history.
