Barcelona news: Las Palmas clash cancelled, blaugrana risked penalty

Spain is currently undergoing a heavy political climate, as tensions have hit breaking point over Catalonia's referendum. The region wishes to break away from Spain and become an independent state once again as it is extremely proud of its heritage and distinct differences with from their Spanish counterparts. So much so that they are bilingual in both Spanish and Catalan.

Barcelona and its Board considered not playing the match due to the clashes between residents and police over the vote but quickly dispelled that notion as they would be allocated an automatic forfeit and 3-0 loss.

Las Palmas for their part disagree with what the region is attempting to do, and conversely with Barcelona’s hesitance. The club as decided to stitch the Spanish flag on their kits in an act of defiance at Barcelona’s home ground. The club released a statement with the following:

"We have decided to embroider our shirt with a small Spanish flag and today's day, October 1, 2017, to testify without strings our hope in the future of this country and in the goodwill of those who live in it, in search of the best understanding.

"No matter how far away the Gran Canaria Stadium is, we have never felt the least temptation to be part of a country other than this. And however complex the situation may be, we will always rely on simplifying it to better understand and find solutions."

The Spanish football association has just confirmed that the game in program against Las Palmas, programmed at 6.15 local time has been cancelled. Barcelona, however, won't face any penalty as the decision has been taken by the Spanish FA.
