Berlusconi to fly to America to sell Mediaset Premium to Sky Italia

It appears that Silvio Berlusconi may be about to sell Italy’s second biggest Sports broadcaster… but not to who we think.

Mediaset’s Premium service has been competing with Sky for broadcasting rights in Italy for years, but looked set to be sold to French group Vivendi to beef up the magnate’s emptying coffers.

Il Sole 24 Ore are, however, reporting that Berlusconi intends to sell to rivals Sky, and that he will fly to America to meet Rupert Murdoch to expedite this.

This comes a few months before the Champions League rights for 2018-2021 are set to be negotiated (next February), while the Serie A’s rights for the same four-year period are set to be auctioned off this summer.

Despite their attempts at a mediation, Mediaset and Vivendi aren’t close to reaching any sort of an agreement, having threatened one another with legal action when the sale of Premium to the French group didn’t go through.
