Capello: 'Italian football is in bad condition'

"Italian football is in bad condition, it's really bad", according to England manager Fabio Capello. In an interview with Radio RAI, he said: "The Italian clubs have dominated Europe for years, but not anymore. Inter won the Champions League last season, that's true, but there were no Italian players in the team. To win at an international level, skill is not enough. You need strength and the ability to play for 90 minutes without the referee stopping the game. Perhaps in Italy we feel satisfied".

"The youth teams shouldn't be obligated to win. The coaches should travel more and get updated. Unfortunately in professional football, the coach who doesn't win must be fired".

"The 'tactical' foul was invented in Italy and it is now used all over the world. If someone fakes he knows that will be awarded by the referee. Unfortunately this cannot be changed in three months, but I hope the new designator will improve this 'Italian style' that has not produced any result. It's key to change this attitude".

"I laugh when I read formations such as 4-4-2 and 4-3-1-2. Modern football is 9-1. There is no 'Catenaccio', we must defend with all the players and attack with as many players as we can. Last year Inter were perfect in this.".

On Serie A: "The championship is interesting. Some clubs like Inter and Juventus are working to understand what they can achieve. Benitez? He's a good coach, last year Inter won everything with Mourinho and Rafa is trying to bring something new. Eto'o's goals are no surprise, he works less than last year and he's more focused when near the goal".
