Chelsea put Courtois contract talks on hold - Here's why

The future of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been thrown into uncertainty after contract talks between the two parties broke down. The Belgian international is understood by the Daily Mail to be asking for double his current salary to come into line with some of the club’s highest earners.

Courtois currently earns £90,000-a-week and is understood to want to double this on any new deal that he signs. His international team-mate Eden Hazard currently earns £200,000-a-week which is what David De Gea earns at Manchester United.

The 25-year-old has a current deal at Stamford Bridge until 2019 and the Premier League champions are aware of interest from Real Madrid. The player’s family still live in the Spanish capital after his time with city rivals Atletico and he has always stated that he would like to move back there one day.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte wants the player tied to a new agreement before the players report back for pre-season training next month but if they fail to do this, it could spark a race for his signature in the summer of 2018.
