Conte, Chelsea, and Juve: A strange five year history

  • Matthew Klimberg
“Il mondo è un gioco,” is a popular Italian phrase to describe strange coincidences. It means “The world is a game,” and such is the case with Antonio Conte’s history with Chelsea and Juventus.

Exactly five years ago an Antonio Conte led Juventus team stunned the reigning world champion Chelsea in Champions League play. Not only did they shock the Londoners, they tore them apart, bit by bit, in what was an annihilating 3-0 home victory.

On the strength of goals from Fabio Quagliarella, Arturo Vidal, and Sebastian Giovinco, Antonio Conte asserted his place on the world stage.

Now, five years later, he finds himself behind the Chelsea bench, and on the wrong side of a dominating Champions League performance from another Italian club. Less than three weeks ago, Chelsea were outplayed by Roma in the Eternal City, losing 3-0.

As Italians would say, the world, is in fact, a game.
