Di Maria given suspended jail term for tax evasion

Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria has become the latest high-profile footballer to be sentenced to jail following tax evasion. El Confidencial (via Calciomercato.com) states that the 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment after admitting to defrauding the authorities out of €1.3M in regards to image right’s during his time with Real Madrid.

Under Spanish law however, the player will not serve any of that sentence as the offence was committed more than two years ago and instead will have the conviction suspended and be ordered to pay €2M in compensation.

Di Maria follows a long line of players who have been charged with trying to cheat the system; Lionel Messi and Neymar have found themselves in similar situations whilst only last week, Cristiano Ronaldo was charged with four separate counts which has seen the player linked with a shock move away from Real Madrid.

Current Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho’s tax affairs are now reported to be under observation following his time at the Santiago Bernabeu although the Portuguese tactician denies any wrong doing.
