Discovering Conte's key to Chelsea's resurgence

Chelsea’s recent performance is proof that Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 formation requires the correct players to successfully implement his strategy. Last season was as dominant campaign as Chelsea could have hoped for, which is why their early season unsteadiness was such a surprise this year.

After the season began with a shocking home defeat to Burnley, Chelsea went on to claim 17 of the next 18 possible points. All seemed to be well as Chelsea seemed to be a contender for the elusive Triple Crown.

However, those hopes were dashed by a disappointed six match stretch which saw them lose to Crystal Palace and claim only one point, of a possible six, in consecutive matches against Roma in Champions league.

Now, Chelsea’s season appears to be on the upswing again as they’re currently on a four-match domestic winning streak.

The up and down nature of Chelsea’s campaign provides a significant clue to what determines their success rate. The result pattern this year coincides with the loss, and now return, of star midfielder N’golo Kante.

Under Conte, Kante has become, “easily the best central midfielder in the world,” according to former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet. After keying Leicester City’s storybook Premier League title, he transferred to London where he’s only added to his accomplishments.

Yes, Antonio Conte is one of the best footballing minds in the world. No, just like every great coach, he must also have great players. Without Kante, Conte would just be another manager in England. Together, however, they were the keys to Chelsea’s success last year, and will continue to be so for the remainder of this season, and beyond.
