EXCLUSIVE Romagnoli shines for Italy, but still needs a veteran partner

Last night’s friendly between Italy and Spain wasn’t just an exciting draw, it was also the Azzurri debut of Milan starlet Alessio Romagnoli.

Despite being played out of position as the left centre-back in a three-man defence, the young Rossoneri confirmed that he is indeed one of the more promising talents of Italian football, covering the likes of Vitolo and David Silva very well indeed.

The Milan star also picked up from where he had left off against Sampdoria, Lazio and Fiorentina, all positive performances after a difficult start to the season. Careful in his marking, punctual in anticipating his opponents and calm when spreading the ball around, the former Roma product is one for the future… but Milan still need to find him someone mature to play alongside.

It isn’t a coincidence that the -year-old has prospered alongside the older, and far less talented Gabriel Paletta: the former Parma man makes up for Romagnoli’s lack of experience.

One thing is certain: with Antonio Rudiger still not playing and Thomas Vermaelen injured, Roma will be kicking themselves for letting go of Romagnoli. Then again, the Anzio native did cost Milan €25 million at the time, in what was widely regarded as Galliani having his pants pulled down by Sabatini.

Now, he could well be the future of Italian defending. But he needs a foil. At least for the time being.
