Former Arsenal player set for Barcelona return

Thomas Vermaelen will return to Barcelona on June 30th, according to the latest reports from Sport.

The former Arsenal star has been in limbo over the last few seasons, struggling with injuries enough to only make twelve appearances on loan to Roma last year.

Ernesto Valverde, Barcelona’s new Coach, has let it be known that he is willing to try the Belgian out, and wants to test him as a potential fourth centre-back.

The Blaugrana don’t quite plan to sell him on yet. His deal expires in 2019, meaning that he will have to sign a new contract next summer, or find another team if he is not to leave on a Bosman.

Acquired for €10 million back in 2014 from the Gunners, the Belgian international has struggled to replicate the form that saw him star at Arsenal. Beyond injuries, his form has been poor, beginning his career at Roma with a red card in a key Champions League qualifier at home to Porto, the Lupi’s loss costing them a place in the group stages.
