From Casillas to Vidal: the football world reacts to Buffon’s end of Italy career
Italy have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second time in history and yesterday’s 0-0 draw against Sweden meant the end of Gianluigi Buffon’s International career. The 40-year-old broke out into tears at the end of the game, announcing the end of his Italy career. “We didn’t underestimate our opponents, it’s everybody’s fault not only the manager’s. I want to thank everybody, I want to thank all the people who supported me during this amazing journey with the national team. Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, everybody, it’s a very sad day”, Buffon told Rai.
The world of football did react to Buffon’s words with some heartbreaking messages not only of former Buffon’s teammates but also of some of his historical opponents and friends like former Real Madrid and Spain star Iker Casillas.
