How Chelsea can qualify for Champions League knockout stages

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea have enjoyed a mixed start to the Champions League campaign, with just four games in, which includes yesterday’s defeat to Roma. With two games yet to be played though, it is not a given that the Blues qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Chelsea, who are second in the group, currently have seven points from four games, one point behind Roma and four points ahead Atletico Madrid, who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Qarabag yesterday.

Wins against both the Rojiblancos and Qarabag will ensure a smooth qualification, but with Atletico in need of a result at Stamford Bridge, tides can turn if things go wrong for the Blues during the next gameweek.

A win or a draw against Atletico will guarantee qualification but a loss will complicate things. It will leave a one-point gap between Diego Simeone’s men and the Londoners, making a win against Qarabag a necessity for them.

A loss or draw against Qarabag away from home will do in the last gameweek, provided that Atletico fail to get a result against Roma.
