Inter become realistic contenders for Chelsea midfielder

Serie A’s fallen giants Inter are looking to bolster their midfield by adding Chelsea star Nemanja Matic to the ranks. According to the London Evening Standard earlier this week, the Nerazzurri have made contact with the Premier League champions about a possible switch to Serie A.

Currently 28, Matic is reportedly on Manchester United’s radar as well, but the Blues are intent on not selling their man to a direct rival and Inter could well be the most feasible destination for the midfielder.

With Antonio Conte’s men now close to sealing a £40m deal for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, the Frenchman is being viewed as a natural replacement for Matic in the heart of the Chelsea side by the former Juve boss, and there is likely to be a vacant spot once the former Benfica man leaves.

Inter are believed to be in talks with Chelsea to acquire Matic’s signature with the fee said to be the region of £34.5million and both parties willing to strike a deal sometime in the future.

Matic rejoined Chelsea from Benfica in the January of 2014 and was one of the best players during the 2014-15 campaign, when the Blues claimed the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho. Over the past 12 months, Matic has formed a solid midfield pairing with PFA Player of the Season N’Golo Kante and once again helped the Stamford Bridge club win the title.

It does seem however, that if the Nerazzurri are to get their hands on the Serbian, they will have to see off competition from Serie A champions Juventus with The Express claiming that the Bianconeri have launched a £40M bid for the player.
