There are reports out of Spain’s As.com today that have linked Atletico Madrid defender to a new interest from Inter, with the Italian club asking about the defender’s situation. After recent approaches from Manchester United and Liverpool, Jose Maria Gimenez is thought to be considering his options. The 22 year old Uruguayan defender is not a regular starter under Simeone with Atletico, and could be on the prowl for a club that offers more consistency. As the World Cup approaches, Gimenez will want to be representing his country in qualification as they attempt to make it to Russia next summer.

Gimenez started in 12 games for Atletico this season in La Liga, and with a newly forming Inter squad under Spalletti, a move to Italy could be the catalyst to get the defender up to his top playing form. As the Nerazzurri continually restructure their players, it will be dependent somewhat on Financial Fair Play and how the numbers work out. Any transfer might be delayed until some players move through the exit door, but with playing regularity on the table, it could be enough to sway a player like Gimenez away from Madrid.
