Inter must be considered a serious threat to Juve crown

Sunday night’s 2-0 victory at home to Atalanta was an example of the type of win Inter fans have been craving for some time. Though it took a while to make the eventual breakthrough, the Nerazzurri always seemed to be on top and it was always a matter of time before they broke the deadlock. Luciano Spalletti’s charges offered a mature, determined display and for that both the coach and his players deserve huge credit.

For several years now, Inter looked devoid of ideas when trying to break down lesser teams, particularly in front of an expectant and often impatient San Siro crowd. Finally, things seem to be changing for the better. Spalletti is managing to go where few before him were able to, and is instilling a mind-set in the players which prevents them panicking at the first sign of trouble. We have already seen this come to fruition several times this season against the likes of Roma, Bologna and AC Milan.

Once again, that patient (but definitely NOT passive) approach paid off and Mauro Icardi was duly rewarded with two goals in what was yet another fantastic example of how he has developed even further under the tutelage of the Tuscan coach. Such is his importance to this Inter side, that surely no amount of money in the world could tempt Suning into cashing in on the club’s captain and star player.

Another positive from last night was the way in which Davide Santon slotted seamlessly back into the starting XI, having not started a single game yet this season. This shows that Spalletti is keeping the group united and makes every player feel equally important to his way of working. Everyone knows their role within the squad, and the former Newcastle United man’s performance against the Bergamo side epitomised everything that is good about this current Inter team.

Carry on like this and there is absolutely no reason why the fans cannot start dreaming about beating Napoli and Juventus to the Scudetto crown come next May.
