Italian head of police: ‘I respect Ancelotti but game suspension has consequences’

  • Mirko Laurenti
The head of Italian Police Franco Gabrielli spoke about security in stadiums at a press conference at Mapei Stadium.

ON GAME SUSPENSION - "Suspending a game? The final decision always must be taken by the responsible for the public order and safety.  I do not want to undermine the role of the referee. Suspending a match can cause several consequences, such as the outflow of thousands of people. It’s an issue that must be evaluated by those who are responsible for the event. The rules speak clearly".

ON ANCELOTTI - "Everyone is free to take the initiatives he believes, but each action has a consequence. I respect Ancelotti, but the final decision is always up to those who manage public order. It involves evaluations that go beyond the sporting aspect".

ON THE ATTENTION TO THE DECLARATIONS – “Everyone has to do his part, from the players to the managers who have to be more careful in the statements, avoiding to turn on the spirits and using more common sense. On the repression of violence we must not have mercy, but in some situations, unless you incite hatred and violence, you can be less rigid. The fact that the Milan riots between the fans of Inter and Napoli have taken place far from the stadium gives me hope. It means that we are marginalizing the problem, but there is still a lot of work to do. More power to the stewards? I agree to better define this figure, but they don’t have to become policemen. Plant engineering and stadium adaptation are essential to guarantee security during the events.”

THE WORDS OF GIORGETTI - "Societies and Federation must impose the teaching of fair play in football schools. We have to reclaim the sport, starting from the suburban fields," said Giancarlo Giorgetti, undersecretary to the presidency of the Council, with responsibility for sport, intervening at the convention of Reggio Emilia at Mapei Stadium on football and security. "Prevention and education are fundamental: we do not want to stop the kids from going to the stadium to cheer their team, but let's give them the necessary culture to understand that they should not be attracted by the delinquency that often".
