Its over - Liverpool end their chase for Dutch international defender

Liverpool’s pursuit of Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk has ended amid chaos and a grovelling apology to the south-coast club. After reports earlier this week stated that the Saints had reported the Merseyside giants to the Premier League for an illegal approach for the 25-year-old, came new last night that the Anfield club had ended their interest in the player.

It’s emerged that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had been sending text messages to the Dutchman which has infuriated Southampton bosses and resulted in their complaint to the governing body. Now the situation has been turned on its head with Liverpool issuing an official apology which stated that;

“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

Liverpool have previous too; back in 2012 a similar situation occurred with the then Fulham player Clint Dempsey when the club reported a deal had been done on its website only for an apology to be issued days later.
