Juve must think twice about renewing Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini's current contract with Juventus will expire in a few months, but - as he said - renewal is little more than a formality. The idea of a "lifetime" extension is the right prize for a player that has made extraordinary contributions to the Bianconeri cause.

He’s done everything on Juve’s backline. From following the team to Serie B all the way through six championships, Chiellini has been there. Yet, after the official switch to a 4-3-3 formation with the Old Lady, it would be a fatal mistake to consider the Tuscan defender to be fix for all that plagues manager Maximiliano Allegri’s formation.

With the departure of Leonardo Bonucci, meaning the breakup of the lauded BBC backline, Chiellini has taken the weight of Juve’s backline onto his shoulders. However, time comes for everyone, and it would be naïve for Juventus to ignore such a fact. Though he will sign a renewal, it would be prudent for the executives at Allianz Stadium to consider the future of the club when debating the length of the extension.
