Maldini: ‘I’d return to AC Milan. On Italy...’

AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo Maldini talked to Sky Sport a few minutes before Italy-Sweden (check out the live updates here). “There is tension, it’s similar to a game I played in 1993 against Portugal, but I can’t imagine a World Cup without Italy. There is nothing to say, motivations are not needed for these kind of games but lot of my teammates didn’t like to play at the San Siro, it could be hard stadium to play into, legs can be shaking sometimes.”

“Spain are a better side than Italy, we knew we could have played the play-offs but the first game against Sweden was not a good one. Italy qualified in 1998 when we beat Russia in the play-offs I was playing and my father was the manager, Italy must qualify. I’d love to play this game. We should ask ourselves some serious questions about the future of Italian football if we fail to qualify. At the moment, however, I don’t even want to think about it.”

“My future? I can chose it, I am not in a rush, I’d only return to AC Milan or join the Italian federation. There was a chance to join the Italian football federation, I talked to them, I didn’t say no but I haven’t heard anything since then. I’d like to return in the World of football, but I’d only return to Italy or AC Milan.
