Manchester United’s Italian defender Matteo Darmian sustained an injury during Italy’s 0-0 draw against Sweden last night, as the Azzurri were dumped out of contention to qualify for the World Cup in 2018.

Darmian had started at left wing-back of the 3-5-2 formation, but was taken off in the second half in what was an attacking change, to be replaced by Stephan El-Sharaawy. Before going off though, Darmian had taken a hit on his rib due to which he had to undergo treatment.

While the 27-year-old came back on, he complained about physical discomfort when he was on the bench. This forced him to leave the bench early and Darmian was accompanied into the dressing room by a doctor.

This comes as bad news for Manchester United, who would have hoped to have their versatile full-back fit for their upcoming home game against Newcastle United. Darmian has made seven appearances for the Premier League giants, failing to grab a single goal or an assist.
