Maradona: Sampaoli offered me a job at Sevilla

Diego Maradona claims he was offered a key role at Sevilla by former manager Jorge Sampaoli.

“Sampaoli phoned me to offer me a role back in his Sevilla days,” Maradona told Argentine newspaper El Clarin, “I received the call when I was watching the Davis Cup final.”

Sampaoli has since gone on to succeed Maradona as Argentina Coach, helping just about secure his side’s qualification to the 2018 World Cup.

Diego himself has a pretty poor record as the Albiceleste’s manager, barely qualifying his side to the 2010 edition through a last-gasp Martin Palermo winner against Peru.

His side went on to be embarrassed by Germany (4-0) in the quarter-finals.

“But the thing is, there are people who are false and who think they are bigger and more important than they are, and I’ll never work with them,” Maradona continued.

Sampaoli’s agents have since denied that this offer was ever made. It wouldn’t be totally surprising if this was a figment of The Hand of God’s imagination.
