French side Marseille have confirmed that they have indefinitely suspended defender Patrice Evra following the Frenchman’s act of kicking his own fan during the club’s Europa League outing in Guimaraes.

Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud released a statement on the club’s official website, confirming the immediate suspension of the former Manchester United and Juventus man. The statement also confirmed that Evra will be summoned for an interview before it takes possible disciplinary action.

Evra was on the bench for the game against Vitoria Guimaraes on Thursday and lashed out at a Marseille fan in what was a rather heated confrontation at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques before the game.

It is said that 500 Marseille fans had managed to get out of the reserved area and had directed provoking at Evra before the game.

Evra’s suspension involves suspension of wages for as long as it is necessary to complete the investigation, after which Evra is likely to incur further penalty.
