Materazzi: ‘I supported Zidane and Real Madrid against Juventus'

The 2006 World Cup final is probably the most iconic moment in the career of Marco Materazzi. The Italian defender was head-butted by Zinedine Zidane causing the Frenchman’s red card in the last match of his playing career. Italy went on to win the final after Zidane’s red card, the turning point of that game.

After that final Materazzi won more trophies with Inter. In 2010 he lifted the Champions League with Inter. That same year Inter won the treble under José Mourinho, a unique achievement for Serie A clubs so far.

Juventus came close to reaching Inter’s record last season when they missed out on the treble due to the Champions League final lost against Real Madrid.

Talking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Materazzi revealed that he supported his ‘enemy’ Zidane in the Champions League final, rather than Juventus.

“I could’t support Juventus but I would have praised them if they had win the competition. I have nothing against Zidane and I’d like to congratulate him for his achievement as a manager. He was smart because he understood how to talk to great champions.”
