Milan: Calhanoglu's future role in doubt

Among the ever increasing list of regrets from AC Milan’s management lies a growing one in the midfield. Hakan Calhanoglu was brought to the San Siro this summer as part of the organization’s ~€220 million spending spree, but is increasingly looking like a Martian that has landed on Earth.

Calhanoglu has been a tactical enigma for manager Vincenzo Montella and the legions of Rossoneri faithful. He has failed to play a convincing offensive-brand of soccer in Montella’s preferred #10 role, and now is in danger of losing his place on the club.

After Milan’s deeply disappointing 0-0 draw with AEK Athens in Europa League play Thursday, the manager has some decisions to make regarding Calhanoglu. With a consistently underperforming team, and with Bonaventura ready to come back to the pitch, the time for Calhanoglu is about to expire. Only an impressive performance against Sassuolo this weekend, which may also determine the fate of Montella, can he change the growing negative opinion of him.
