Mourinho: United were owed a penalty

Jose Mourinho has unsurprisingly had another go at the refereeing.

His Manchester United side was unable to overcome Southampton yesterday, drawing 0-0 at Old Trafford and likely condemning the Red Devils to lose more ground compared to rivals Manchester City.

Yet the Special One had something to say about referee Craig Pawson, guilty in his eyes of having denied the Reds a penalty.

"I think it is a disappointing afternoon for Craig because he's a fantastic referee, one of the most promising in Europe," the Portuguese told BT Sport. "It was one of the key points [of the game].

"We missed easy chances but I'm really unhappy with the penalty — not with Pawson's performance.

"I think Craig had a good performance, it was a big decision to make from him."

The loss allowed Chelsea to overtake the Red Devils in the table, and steal second place for under their noses.

“It is a penalty like [Marcus] Rashford against Leicester, [Ander] Herrera against City. [Jonathan] Moss, [Michael] Oliver and Craig tonight are good referees. So the referees’ performances in these matches were good – these were unlucky decisions that punished us.”
