Official: Italy awarded 2019 European Under-21 Championships

After hosting the final of the Europa League in 2014 and last season’s Champions League Finals for both men and woman, Italy has been awarded the 2019 European Under-21 championships.

European governing body UEFA announced the news earlier as the finals increase to 12 teams from next year’s competition in Poland. The cities that will be used are Bologna, Cesena, Reggio Emilia and Udine with the principality of San Marino also a possible destination.

The qualifying groups will be drawn in January 2017 and we will know the 11 finalists that will join the hosts by November 20 2018. The tournament will also determine access to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Italy last hosted a major football tournament way back in 1990 when the World Cup came to the peninsula. Many of the current stadia in the country have not had any substantial redevelopment since then but this news will go way some way to improving the mood in the country after the government decided not to bid for the 2024 Olympic Games.
