After a 19-year career at the top of the game, Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from professional football.
In a glittering career, the 36-year-old played 710 times for Liverpool winning eight major trophies before moving to MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015. He remains the fourth most capped player for England having worn the shirt of the Three Lions on 114 occasions. Speaking shortly after the announcement Gerrard stated that; “"I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career, I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy. I fulfilled my childhood dream by pulling on the famous red shirt of Liverpool."
Now it’s on to the next stage of his career as he works towards his UEFA A coaching licence. Having already turned down the vacant manager’s job at League One side MK Dons, Gerrard has also been linked with moves to Celtic and Newcastle United as well as a return to Anfield to join Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff. Speaking on the future he explained that; “I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be."
