OPINION: Why Napoli should sell €94m Chelsea target Higuain

When Aurelio De Laurentiis decided to sell Edinson Cavani to PSG for € 68 million in 2013, people though Napoli would have struggled to find another hit-man capable of scoring over 30 goals per season.

The partenopei president proved his detractors wrong signing Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid for a fee of € 40 million shortly after that the Uruguay International had packed his suitcase to move to the Parc des Princes.
Scorer of 35 goals in 43 games in all competitions this term, Higuain is believed to be Antonio Conte’s top target to strengthen Chelsea’s attack in the summer.

This morning’s edition of the Daily Star reported that ‘The Blues’ are ready to trigger the Argentinean’s € 94 million release clause. Regular transfer rumours of course, which have not been followed by a concrete offer yet, but Aurelio De Laurentiis has already showed how well he can invest incomes from players’ sales in order to build a new and stronger team.

The Italian business man sold Ezequiel Lavezzi to PSG for € 30 million back in 2012 after that he had bought the Argentinean star for a fee of € 5.5 million six years before. Similarly, he acquired Edinson Cavani from Palermo for € 16 million in 2010, before selling him for € 68 million three seasons, 104 games and 78 goals after.

Higuain’s summer sale for almost € 100 million would come as no surprise. The Argentinean’s departure would allow De Laurentiis to make a € 131 million capital gain from the sales of these three players only: a record-breaking profit which could help Napoli to build new team.
