Premier League supremo still has "burning desire" for games to be played overseas

Premier League chief Richard Scudamore has maintained that his ambition is to play a round of fixtures overseas. Having proposed the idea several years ago, Scudamore has stated that the success of the Asia Trophy out in the Far-East shows that it would be in the league’s interest to satisfy the thirst for top-flight English football by shifting a round of matches outside of England.

The original proposal that was made in 2008 saw a swell of opposition from fans in the UK, FIFA and also UEFA which led to plans being shelved. Scudamore however, is confident that it will happen one day after having seen other sports, such as NFL and Baseball successfully make the move outside of the US.

Scudamore explained that if the move doesn’t happen during his time at the helm, then he will 100% behind his successor should they decide to take the idea forward, stating that; “If someone does that’s great.” he said. “It would make it easier for us. We don’t need to be first. Sometimes first up isn’t best dressed.”

“I may be at the Premier League for another five, ten, 15 or 20 years. There is no plan to do it. Is there still a burning desire? The clubs would like to do it but we are also realistic in that until the fan, political and media reaction is any more warm towards it, it won’t happen.”

“If it did happen it wouldn’t be a 39th game. I think there would be a desire to do a round of fixtures internationally but there is no prospect of it happening any time soon or in anybody’s realistic timeframe. We have no time for it.”

"I am a man of belief. I believe it was a good idea to try and do it then and I still do but I understand it is unacceptable. It was about wanting to do it. I don’t do anything for a false reaction. I put my neck out and said: ‘I think we should do this. I thought it was the right thing to do I still do. I just think it would be an unbelievable thing but it’s not going to happen.”
