Real Madrid misses this striker but won't get him back

Mariano Diaz has excelled for Lyon since joining from Real Madrid in the summer, scoring seven goals in nine league matches to fill the void left by Alexandre Lacazette who joined Arsenal.

Real Madrid decided against signing a striker in the summer despite offloading Diaz to Lyon and Alvaro Morata to Chelsea. The question of whether Madrid can get Mariano back has become more pressing of late. Real Madrid are having a really difficult time scoring goals, as Cristiano Ronaldo went into mid-October without even scoring his first in La Liga.

When asked by Onda Cero of Radio MARCA whether Diaz’s contract contained a buy-back clause, Mariano emphasized that he was unaware whether any such clause existed. However, the higher-ups at Olympique Lyon recently released an official statement declaring that Mariano Diaz’ contract does not include a buy-back clause. That’s bad news for Madrid.

Madrid can, however, take solace in the knowledge that they will retain 35% of whatever profit Lyon makes from selling Diaz in the future.
