Roma: Monchi recounts the moment he discussed retirement with Totti

AS Roma’s sporting director, Monchi, is renowned worldwide for his legendary record of value signings and success at Sevilla. But even he was nervous when speaking to Francesco Totti about the Roman legend’s retirement.

In an interview with El Mundo, Monchi describes his “legs shaking” when telling the 41-year-old he was not in Roma's plans for the future and it was time to retire. “When I told him, my legs were shaking because I did not tell anyone, I told Francesco Totti. No more no less.”

“I guess it was not the best news of his life, but I think at least he appreciated that I told him, looking into his eyes,” he continued. “And surely that was important to lay the foundations of a very good human and professional relationship between us two.”

He also spoke glowingly of the passion Roma fans possess. “It has a huge introduction in the life of the city. It is ambitious and not very conformist. I admire the degree of loyalty and trust of people in your team, despite the fact that in recent years they have not achieved that coveted Scudetto.”
