Roma reveal failure to land £50 million Salah replacement

Roma sporting director Monchi has revealed that the club faced competition from Barcelona for Riyad Mahrez this past summer, but both clubs failed to get a deal done.

The Giallorossi were in the market for a winger after losing Mohamed Salah to Liverpool, with the Egyptian international establishing himself as a key figure in the side last season.

However, their efforts ended in disappointment as although they were seemingly keen on signing Mahrez, they couldn't reach a deal with Leicester City given their £50 million asking price, according to The Mirror.

"We wanted a left-footed winger to replace Mohamed Salah and put it all on Mahrez, but the only reason he didn't come was because the club wouldn't sell.

"It's not an excuse, they said no to Barcelona too."

Mahrez was a pivotal figure for the Foxes two years ago when they won the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri, but the 26-year-old has struggled to recapture that level of form since.

Nevertheless, he's quietly having a decent campaign this year, scoring three goals and providing five assists in 12 appearances in all competitions, and so it remains to be seen whether or not Roma try their luck again.

As for Salah, he's now showing his class at Anfield, with the former Roma star scoring twice at the weekend to take his tally to 12 goals in 17 games. Although it could be argued Roma miss him, their recent form suggests that they're adapting well without him now.
