Sabatini: ‘Selling Lamela to Tottenham was painful, Totti deserves the Nobel Prize in physics’

AS Roma have parted ways with Walter Sabatini who had been serving as their director of sport since 2011. Today, Sabatini has held a press conference to explain why the two parties have decided to take different paths.

“I am leaving a very good team. I am sad because we could not win any Serie A title during my time at the club, but I still think we had the potential to do it.”

“This experience was not part of my life, this experience was my life. I am sure I will be struggling in the future, working for another club.”

“I want to thank everyone at the club. It’s been an amazing experience. There are true pro working for AS Roma, trust them.”

“Totti would deserve the Nobel prize in physics and the Ballon d’Or. Of course his greatness does not allow all the others to develop.”

“We made some great business, some other times we were unlucky. If I sell Benatia and buy Manolas I am not damaging the club, I want to be useful. We did not win any trophy, but we’ve been always involved in the race for the title. I don’t think my work was harmful for AS Roma.”

“Nainggolan has asked a new contact and negotiations are ongoing. New contracts, however, are not a priority. Players must understand that missing out on Champions League qualification is a problem. I don’t want to fight for some else’s ideas. I have my own ideas and I am not going to change them. That’s why I left. Also, I was close to signing a player that moved somewhere else. Do some researches and you’ll find out. I am still suffering for that collapsed deal [he might be talking about Torino’s newcomer Boye].”

“Selling Lamela to Spurs, then, killed me. I wanted to buy him to warn other clubs and selling him was painful. He’s an amazing player.”

“Pallotta is not tired. He still has passion and wants to build a new stadium. He knows that it is a vital step to compete at an international level.”
