Shock new TV deal will make Serie A more equitable

Serie A’s TV rights are to take quite a step forward in making income redistribution fairer, quite the shock to the system.

According to our partners at Calcio e Finanza, if the bottom-ranked team in the league used to make one euro for every four that the leader earned, the ratio is more one to two now.

This much-needed measure is set to hit some of the big teams hard.

Juventus, Milan and Inter are set to lose out on the latest agreement, with the Bianconeri 40 million down, while the two Lombard sides are set to miss out on 16m each. Roma will lost about 8m, Napoli 7-8m, but Lazio somehow only say goodbye to 3m.

While previously 40% of TV rights were divided equitably, that number is now 50%, with no 5% bonus given to cities with the biggest populations, a clause Lotito mysteriously was in favour of.

A remaining 30% will be based on previous results: 15% on the previous season, while 10% on the previous five campaigns, and 5% on a team’s historical record as of 1946-1947.
