Spanish media praise Chelsea duo
- Jordan Russel
deadliest strikers in world football. Thanks to his goal at the weekend against
Manchester United, the Spanish forward has now reached seven goals so far this
season, confirming that he is on a fantastic run of form. His seven goals make
him the third top scorer in the Premier League, just behind Harry Kane and
Sergio Agüero (8) and on a par with the Brazilian Gabriel Jesus.
However, part of his success in front of goal must be credited to teammate César Azpilicueta, who has become his number one partner in crime. His fellow Spaniard has
assisted him in five of the seven occasions in which Morata has scored in the
league – that is 71.4% of his goals.
Statistically, no other duo in the Premier League is as effective as this one. Tottenham Hotspur duo Kieran Trippier and Harry Kane are closest to the Chelsea pair, having combined four times so this campaign thus far. The former Osasuna full-back’s first assist for Morata came on matchday three during Chelsea’s victory over Everton, before others followed against the likes of Leicester City and Stoke. Then, most recently, the 28-year-old put the ball on a plate for Morata to head home the only goal of a hard-fought win against United.
Despite the recent success of both players, they won’t be able to shine together
on the international stage this time around. Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui has
decided against calling up Azpilicueta for the friendlies against Costa Rica and
Russia. The deadly duo will be hoping to pick up from where they left off against
West Brom on matchday twelve once club football resumes next weekend.
