Stadio della Roma project finds even more red tape

  • Matthew Klimberg
Another day, another delay for the Stadio della Roma project. Rome’s bureaucracy threatens, once again, to postpone, if not outright eliminate, plans to build a new home for AS Roma.

According to Il Tempo (paywalled), an obscure law threatens the future of construction on the state-of-the-art facility. Per law, the Hippodrome at Tor di Valle, built for the 1960 Olympics, cannot be demolished without the consent of it’s designer (because, Roman red tape, of course). Unsurprisingly, it’s designer Julio Lafuente is no longer alive.

In 2016 Goldman Sachs made a €30 million loan to Stadio TDV S.p.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of NEEP Roma Holding, for the pre-development cost of the stadium.

AS Roma subsequently renewed their lease with the Stadio Olimpico until 2020.

Despite the paywall, you can get a good sense of the latest issue, as well as a smattering of others, that threatens the heart of James Palotta’s strategy to turn AS Roma into a consistent world footballing power by checking out Roma Press.
