Sunderland challenge Torino for Croatian defender

Sunderland and Torino are set to battle it out for the signing of Domagoj Vida in the January transfer window. The Serie A side are long time admirers of the 27-year-old centre back who is a cornerstone of Croatia national team.

Vida is under contract with Dynamo Kiev until 2018 and Torino had been linked with signing the solid-rock centre back since last summer as the granata saw both Nikola Maksimovic and Kamil Glik leaving the Stadio Grande Torino in the previous transfer window.

Premier League club Sunderland, however, have also set sights on the Croatian defender and have already made contact with Dynamo Kiev to sound out the availability of Vida who has three goals in 18 games with the Ukraine side in all competitions so far this season.

Sunderland had also challenged Torino for the signing of Joe Hart last summer, but the English goalkeeper opted to move to Italy rather than joining Sunderland and Torino hope that history will repeat itself in January.
