Super League v Champions League: Which future for European competitions?

Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City will almost certainly play Champions League football next season. The Italian tactician is leading the most surprising team in England, maybe the most surprising team in the world or even of all times.

Another couple of victories would ensure the Foxes their participation to Europe’s elite tournament next season and with six victories in the last seven games, Claudio Ranieri’s side would become the Premier League champions for this season.

So Leicester City might share fears and hopes with the best European sides during the next Champions League’s group stage draw. Their very Italian style of play, their tremendous counter-attacks and their solid defense have allowed Claudio Ranieri’s side to get till here.

They can emulate what Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest did in the 70s, when they surprisingly won the league before lifting two European cups, an old version of today’s Champions League.

Super League v Champions League: Which future for European competitions?

That competition was very different from today’s most important European tournament. It was initially played by those teams which had won their domestic league during the previous campaign. If the same rule would be valid today, Leicester City could have been the only English side to play that tournament.

You are all aware that the new Champions League is different, because it is open to the best-ranked teams in Europe and big Premier League sides can only save their dramatic season snatching a Champions League spot.

Things could further change pretty soon as some the biggest English clubs are plotting the creation of an European Super League which would include only the most popular teams in Europe, regardless their table placement in the previous season.

Ranieri is not a big fan of this idea: ‘That wouldn’t be natural. Fans would not like it’, the former Chelsea, Valencia and Juventus gaffer has recently revealed and lot of his colleagues in England, including Man Utd boss Luis Van Gaal agreed with the Foxes’ boss opinion.

What about you? Which competition do you prefer? The old European Cup, the current Champions League or the future European Super League?
