Totti: ‘I was close to joining Real Madrid’

Francesco Totti turns 40 today (watch his top ten goals here). The legendary AS Roma captain was wanted by AC Milan back in the days, the former DS of the diavoli Ariedo Braida has claimed, but Real Madrid also went close to signing the 40-year-old star.

“The year after we won the Serie A title I was very close to joining Real Madrid. That was the club I wanted to play for if I had to leave AS Roma. I wouldn’t have joined any other Italian club out of respect for fans. I did not join Real Madrid because many things changed. The president didn’t want me to go even if we had an argument. Than my family and my friends made me understand that here I have many things I wouldn’t have had in Madrid.”

“I’ve always tried to be serious pro. I have no bad habits, I always do my best in trainings. I have commitment and passion, still today.”

“A 16-year-old boy who wants to play football, has to have fun during the game, first of all. When one has fun and is determined, then can snatch any results he wants. Passion helps you to see what the future has for you.”

“There has been a moment I thought I could have changed team, especially when there were problems to sign the last but one contract. My family made me change my mind.”

“The best day of my career is the day of my debut, that’s where everything has started from.”

“Vincent Candela is the teammate I was most in sync with. We are still friends, we frequently go out together. I respect all my opponents.”

“Sometimes I had arguments with my managers, it can happen. I’ve never asked the club to sack a manager, or hire one I wanted.”
