Udinese don’t bend to ultras' will: Danilo signs contract extension

Udinese have already chosen the player who is going to represent the club’s image after the retirement of Antonio Di Natale who netted 227 goals in 446 games with the club.

The Zebrette’s ‘new’ captain will be Brazilian centre-back Danilo, another veteran at the club having joined Udinese in 2011. Danilo played first-team football with each Udinese manager since then: from Guidolin to Stramaccioni, from Colantuono to De Canio.

The choice of Danilo might appear as logic and automatic, but things are not as straightforward as one would think. Danilo had quite a big dispute with Udinese’s fans last year after their home defeat against AS Roma, Udinese were in serious danger of being relegated to Serie B after that game and Danilo reacted with a rude gesture to fans’ criticisms.

Most of Udinese ultras have yet to forgive Danilo and some of them are believed to have pushed for the player’s exit. Udinese, however, have decided not to bend to ultras’ will and extend Danilo’s stay until 2020, when Danilo will be 36.
