Verdi snubbed by Ventura, sends record-setting message

Gian Piero Ventura decided against bringing Bologna star Simone Verdi to Italy’s pair of World Cup playoff matches against Sweden. It appears the center-forward is non-too-pleased with being snubbed and he put on a masterful performance against Crotone later in the day.

Only hours after seeing his fellow countrymen selected, Verdi secured a first-half brace in style on Saturday night. For the first time since 2004-05 he scored direct kick goals with both feet, both of which came within an eight-minute span
