West Ham to pip Chelsea for ex-Man Utd star

West Ham are edging closer to signing Javier Hernandez, according to Sky Sports UK, a blow for rivals Chelsea.

The Hammers need a centre-forward, having struggled up front last season despite signing Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri.

Former Manchester United star Chicharito Hernandez has been on fire in Germany, scoring 39 times in two seasons with the BayArena side.

Hernandez was at Manchester United between 2010 and 2015, but has a £13 million release clause written into his deal, an opportunity for anyone to snag the 29-year-old.

Hernandez, who spent five years at Manchester United between 2010 and 2015, has a £13m release clause in his contract at Leverkusen.

While Mexican paper Publimetro had confirmed that the Hammers had no problem paying that sum, Hernandez’s salary demands (£140,000 a week) was considered to be too much for the East London side.

Chelsea, for their part, need someone to replace Diego Costa, who is not a part of Antonio Conte’s plans.
