Who has been the best Trequartista in Serie A so far? VOTE NOW!

    • Edo Dalmonte, @edodalmonte
With Serie A only getting underway again on January 6th, us poor fans of Italian football have to content ourselves with killing time and churning out Top 10 and Best XI lists.

Today, we review the best playmakers for the hypothetical 4-2-3-1 we have in mind.

Readers voted in Inter shotstopper Samir Handanovic with 33% of the vote, beating out Gigi Donnarumma, (Milan, 29%), Pepe Reina (Napoli, 21%) and Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, 17%).

With regards to the RB position, Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj easily came away with 42% of the vote, whilst Fiorentina’s Marcos Alonso only just pipped Patrice Evra to the leftback position with 37% to the Frenchman’s 36%.

Inter’s solid rock defensive duo Joao Miranda and Jason Murillo were elected been elected as the best two defenders of the league, with 27% and 21% respectively, Kostas Manolas coming third with 17%.

Inter kept up their dominance in midfied, with Marcelo Brozovic stealing a whopping 33% of the total, 4% ahead of Fiorentina’s Borja Valero, who will partner him in front of the defence. Paul Pogba, for his part, only polled 17%.

On the right, another Beneamata star, Adem Ljajic, came away with exactly half of the total votes, leading the impressive Federico Bernardeschi (36%) by a country mile.

Remember, we're looking for who has played best so far, not who has the most potential or who has been better in the past.

VOTE for this season’s best Trequartista HERE from these four options:
    1. PAULO DYBALA: having arrived during the summer for €40 million, the former Palermo star had a tough start, between adapting to life at a big club and actually making it off the bench. Now, he’s irreplaceable: his play, his creative spark, his understanding with Mario Mandzukic all make him an indispensable cog in Juventus’ rebuild.
    2. EDER: Eder started the season with a bang, netting six goals by late September, and ten in total. When he scored, Walter Zenga’s Samp was flying. When he stopped… not so much. Despite cooling down, he’s been one of the best so far.
    3. JOSIP ILICIC: Paulo Sousa has brought out the best in him. So close to leaving in summer after a season of so-so play under Vincenzo Montella. The Viola’s season hinges on his left foot.
    4. RICCARDO SAPONARA: Ever since he joined Empoli, he’s been a completely different player. Constantly improving since his January return, he is now one of the hottest names on the transfer market. The June one, that is…
