Why Italian FA’s decision to campaign for Giulio Regeni puts AS Roma in a difficult position

The Italian FA has decided to support Amnesty International’s campaign demanding the truth about Giulio Regeni, the Italian student tortured and murdered in Cairo last April.

Banners will be raised before each of next week-end’s the Serie A and Serie B games, though AS Roma could decide not to support the campaign.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reports, the Serie A side are negotiating a new partnership with Egypt Tourism Ministry and Mohammed Salah is supposed to be the partnership’s testimonial.

In order to avoid diplomatic embarrassments situations, Egypt FA’s vice-president Ado Rida has reportedly asked AS Roma not to support the campaign or to take part in a different way, such as having the banner lifted by kids rather than footballers or showing it on the stadium’s screens rather than on the pitch.
