Abete: 'Repeating Italy-Serbia would set an enormous precedent'

    • GM

The President of the Football Federation, Giancarlo Abete spoke of the request, submitted to Uefa by the Football Association of Serbia, to repeat the match between Italy and Serbia that was stopped on Tuesday because of the behaviour of the Serbian ultras, "The problem is not the guilt or otherwise of Serbia, the problem is the line that UEFA is planning to take. The moment you legitimize a situation of vandalism such as that in Genoa, allowing the federation to refer to the fans, to repeat the game, it would set an enormous precedent, but we have confidence and a duty to respect the bodies of sports justice. There will be a first judgement and if there is an unwelcome reponse there is always the opportunity to appeal".

"We are calm and I think it is right that the Italian federation maintains a profile of great serenity – added Abete. The FIGC did what it could, the events happened in a clear way and we are victims of this situation. The game should have been a celebration of sport with many children and it was not possible. The disciplinary commission will now have to assess what happened in Genoa".

The Disciplinary Committee announced that it will examine the case on October 29 and not 28 as reported initially.
