Chapecoense modify their badge to honour crash victims

Chapecoense have changed their club badge to honour the victims of last week’s plane crash which claimed the lives of 71 people. Two stars (one white and one green) has now been added in the memory of the 19 first-team players who perished when their plane came down in the Medellin mountains in Colombia.

In a statement posted on their official website earlier the club explained that; “The first star mentions the conquest of the Copa Sudamericana 2016. She is white in a sign of peace. The peace found by our Eternal Champions. In addition, white symbolises the light that will guide us forward”.

Chapecoense were awarded the Copa Sudamericana title and as a result will receive around £1.6 million in total; £790,000 for the Recopa, Conmebol’s version of the European Super Cup and £1.4 million for going into the group stage of next year’s Copa Libertadores.

Since the tragedy, donations have flooded in from around the world as the club tries to rebuild and be able to compete once again.
