EXCLUSIVE How Inter players forced a return to 4-3-2-1

Inter’s players are reported to have had a private face-to-face with Caoch Frank De Boer, and asked for a return to a four-man defence.

It emerges, according to our sources, that the Nerazzurri squad didn’t react well to the Dutch Coach’s approach to the first two Serie A games, so much so that they spoke to him about it privately.

The dressing room wanted the 4-2-3-1 to be used if Icardi and Ever Banega were on the field. The former Sevilla player had moved to Inter in part because Roberto Mancini’s strategy was based around using him as a playmaker in that lineup.

The Argentina came to prominence playing in that setup in Spain, becoming one of the best trequartistas in the business. Unhappy at Frank De Boer’s choice of 3-5-2, he immediately made his doubts clear, and it seems that the former Ajax Coach listened, so much so that he is going against his original plans.

Another player who spoke up was Mauro Icardi, who recently said some very revealing things in a press conference.

“The Coach wanted us to play the first game in a 3-5-2 formation” Maurito said, “We hadn’t used it since the days of Walter Mazzarri, and one could see that we hadn’t tried it for a while”.

“I like playing with 4-2-3-1 becaue I can count on quality players helping me out, both behind me and on the wings”.
