Genoa star Pavoletti: ‘Gasperini is helping me do things I would never have imagined’

It’s been quite a year for Genoa’s Leonardo Pavoletti. The 26-year-old ended last season with six goals in ten Serie A appearances for the Grifone, and has picked up where he left off with three more strikes this time round.

A late bloomer who has spent most of his career in the lower leagues, the Livornese striker is very grateful to one person in particular for bringing out the best in him.

“[Giampiero] Gasperini is helping me do things I would never have imagined,” Pavoletti told Il Secolo XIX.

With Goran Pandev playing pretty poorly – not to mention being sent off for a completely unnecessary lunge against Lazio recently – Pavoletti is now Genoa’s clear number one option in attack, and the former Sassuolo man hasn’t disappointed.

“I’d love to get to double digits, but what truly matters is that every goal scored should bring in some points, too: every goal should be useful to the team”.

This is, regrettably, something Pavoletti can’t guarantee, with the Grifone’s back line on a bit of a helter-skelter this season.

Giampiero Gasperini’s system is also a tiring one, and saw his charges fall apart last week on the road against Empoli. Luckily for Genoa, they quickly recovered with a spectacular 3-3 draw against Torino, but the striker admits it’ll take something else entirely to beat their upcoming opposition, Napoli.

“Losing is ok, but not that badly.

“Our draw with Torino has been a morale-booster, it came against a team that’s fighting to play in Europe.

“We’ll have to be perfect against Napoli”
