Italian flop in Europe: 'The Non-EU player restriction is foolish'

The defeats of AC Milan and Roma in the Champions League once again raised the subject of the Italian club's strength in Europe. With the exception of Inter last season, the Italian team have been unsuccessful in European competitions.

Calciomercato.com asked Fifa agent Sabatino Durante, an expert in the South American market, if this can be due to the policy of only allowing one Non-EU player in Serie A: "I am now in Brazil. There are some fantastic young players born in 1992. I have also seen some talents born in 1995 and 1996. But they are players that we are going to miss, they will go to reinforce other leagues, like the German or the Spanish one. The restriction from two to one Non-EU player is foolish. Maybe we forgot that in the last two World Cups that we won (1982 and 2006), Italy always beat teams with players who were playing in Italy".

Then he spoke of his own personal experience: "I remember Gattuso's debut, who played as a right side defender in the match Perugia-Foggia where he looked after Simutenkov. He did not play because he was Italian, but because he was good. This restriction doesn't make sense. If the wine produced in Chile is better than the Italian, I'll buy it".
